 A garden centre in Lincolnshire will create 50 jobs in retail when it  leases its £1.6 million, 2,000 square feet extension to fashion and camping goods retailers as part of a diversification initiative.

Richard Pennell, managing director of Pennells, told the Lincolnshire Echo: "We have been planning this extension for the last three or four years. What we are doing is in line with other leading garden centres in the UK and reflects customers' increasing desire for a wider shopping experience."

According to Mr Pennell, the success of the expansion is likely to encourage more garden centres to diversify and create retail jobs by opening new stores.

"More and more owners of garden centres are realising their capacity to become mini department stores," he told the newspaper.

Fashion chain Leading Labels has confirmed it will be climbing on board this project it opens a store at the garden centre.
